I just have to add the frase of another great thinker:

Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values.

Which implements as such: Lower your values and acchieve happiness. If you truly are content with living as a stoned, retired, wheelchair'd cartoonist - just stop doing what you do and add drugs and wheelchair. Whola! Happiness.

Freaky...but i had the very same conversation over dinner y'nite(that wud be day for you)...except that we were calling it point A and point B...point A being bounded in by all the judgements and emotions and sensations etc and point B being the absolute absence of all of the above.
3 hrs into the discussion I decided that i wud much rather stay in the domain of point A. If i dunt think and sense, then i dunt exist.

I am, cuz i think!

After having had a severe pain attack last night (and not one pain killer in the house) I sooo agree with you ...

Jin

I like your conclusion, now I know where that phrase "stoned" came from.

Teo

Ahah, cool punchline ^^

Umm ... so what happened to the Happiness Formula;

Happiness = health + money + social life + meaning
[Dilbert Blog 24th March, 2007]

Is The Happiness Formula book even thinner now ... or are we confusing pain-free emotions - such as contentment, tranquility, and happiness?

Daniel

I think contentedness is the word for lack of pain, boredom, etc. Happiness is something else. Nice thought though.

jo

Prehaps a conscious rock would feel pain. Dammed erosion!

Happiness the absence of pain? Nice, but alas one needs the pain to understand the joy of not feeling it.

Does greater pain bring greater happiness when it becomes absent?

I feel that happiness is created through the individual working with and towards evolution. When one meets the requirements stipulated by mans survival, one is happy. This of course involves the absence of pain, but happiness is not created through it.

I think you thought of the joke at the end then wrote the rest as this is one of your less thought out observations. Just my opinion.

Marcos

The heart asks pleasure first
And then, excuse from pain-
And then, those little anodynes
That deaden suffering;

And then, to go to sleep;
And then, if it should be
The will of its Inquisitor,
The liberty to die.

(Emily Dickinson)

I died laughing at that last line!!!

I wasn't expecting such a dorky joke, to be honest. Twas funny though.

Your hypnotism is getting to me. All I can think about while driving is when simulation becomes so real I won't be able to tell the difference between reality and videogames. So as I'm driving I'm just thinking about the sweet glare effects and in-game advertising. Where the programmers got lazy was when they stamped "Not of this world" christian sticker textures on the rear window of every SUV, luxury car, and lifted truck.

Where are the cheat codes, man? Is there a special way to do the hokey pokey that nets me god-mode or infinite cash?

Drugs will never be allowed for people of that age, they will have nothing left to pass on to benefactors for the gov't to tax. Also, as a cruel joke, when you programmed yourself into this Matrix-like world - fun drugs don't have an affect after age 75. True sexual peak will be reached at age 110, also another cruel joke.

Actually, I like conflict in my life.

I don't like it when I have nothing to do, so I make sure I always have too much to do. I don't like people that are always nice to me. I like people that tease me so I can tease them back.

If nirvana is boredom as is sometimes postulated, I don't want it.

put that in your blueberry and smoke it.

Ludwig

Nice pun, Scott.

The sensations of hot and cold, as noticed by we pesky humans, are simply the flow of heat into or out of our body. The same absolute temperature can feel hot or cold.

Since all of our senses are AC coupled (change detectors), how about defining emotional happiness and pain in those terms, where they would be defined as the direction of flow of something into or out of our emotional selves. (For women, perhaps the flow of "special"?) Ich know I will pay for that one ... That kind of concept would explain the transient nature of such things, as the sensor recovers when there is no change in the signal.

A rock is just solidified cosmic sexual debris. But a human is living sexual debris with a soul. And as you pointed out, a consciousness.

If you live to be 140 you will have to work to at least a 100, I wouldn't expect a good job to last that long, you would likely die in poverty.

Can you go ahead and just use your political clout to remove drug laws for everyone while you're at it?

K, thx, bye.

Archana Bahuguna

I agree with you completely on the rock thing, except that I also believe rocks already have infinite consciousness and they are above pain, joy or sorrow...they are higher beings.

Nice thoughts.

Chris

Music is like that too; my orchestra professor always said that the moments of silence are more important than the moments of sound. The silence makes the sound dramatic and meaningful. So it is with pain and happiness: the pain makes the happiness more meaningful; they must coexist.

But I'm confused - why does it have to be that pain is the absence of happiness? Why isn't it that happiness is the absence of pain?

Jaeson

As much as I think you may be on to something here, it occurs to me you might have the polarities reversed. What if happiness is the actual experiance, and pain is an absence of happiness?

Bob

Sounds good to me. Can't we get the drug-law-free age lowered to 50 or 60?

Mason

READ MY RAMBLING
Wouldnt happiness be when you are happy, instead of when you are not depressed? When you are not depressed, you are neutrel, when you are happpy, you are feeling good. As in you laugh, you are happy, when you get hit in the face, you are depressed(unless you are into that) and when you are not being hit, and you are not laughing, you are just kinda numb.

Heath

Why is everyone ranting about Buddhism when that part about the utility of empty space is very clearly a paraphrase (albeit perhaps unintentional) of a passage from the Tao Te Ching?

Chapter 11:
"...
take a lump of clay and expand the enclosed center within and a vessel is created

it is this expanded enclosure that makes the vessel useful

likewise a structure does not make a space and shape for living
space and shape are necessary for living

all of this is called creation through not-being

not-being creates the intangible

the intangible creates the utility of the intangible"

Give credit where credit is due, people. Lao Tzu wrote this longer before any Buddhist walked the Earth.

Comfort and happiness are one and the same when one has achieved a state of relative inner peace. I think so long as we are working towards our goals in terms of fulfillment, there can be contentment in small gains.

I think keeping in mind that there will always be new goals, kind of allows us to be satisfied in increments before the current list are achieved. But yes, I know what it is to miss something every day. I just don't let myself get all wrapped up in it is all. There's no point in experiencing a lack of satisfaction when all our needs are met, and most of our wants. If anything, it's a rare luxury.
